Animating Hand test
Working with Leon Cauchois in experimenting animating with wet clay.
Taking sequence 06 scene 02 "male extends hand" managed to create a dark atmosphere by focusing the light source directly onto the hand.
Applying the clay was successful, though heat from the body made the clay dry quicker - which meant for me to keep frequently spraying the clay hand - keeping it moist.
Animating the hand was difficult without istopmotion with Onion Skin - though I managed to keep the shots consistent enough through the D90. Though I would prefer a Mac which will be available soon.
Problems encountered were mainly the issue without istopmotion - the hand would drop or rise out of shot as it was needed to be held in mid-air.

Animating Snake test
Sequence 4 scene 01/02 animating the snake with wet clay.
Having only myself to work with I found it extremely complicated to animate and taking frames. Animating the snake was difficult as the wet clay didn't quite cling to the model especially when I was moving the model for the shots.
The model itself has a perfect life-like movement - when trying to replicate through animation was irritable - although I dampened the surface to make it become more accessible the wet clay would slide off onto the surface.
Thoughts! What I would like to attempt is animating the snake model on a surface of clay, it might make the model easier to animate and the connecting clay from the surface to the model, could make it visually effective. I want also to experiment with different angles and shots with the camera having ECU's (Extreme close-up) of the snake scraping through the clay surface.

Beginning...
10:46: D90 not reading into istopmotion, or istopmotion is failing to read the connection to the camera - both myself and Leon are trying to solve the problems which could be causing this fault.
11:15: istopmotion still not picking up either the D90 or D70 or a normal digital still camera - USB cable is not the problem as it works in connection with various other software. Don't understand why this is happening, it must be with the istopmotion, looked into the Bionx website - not much help, they didn't have any solutions.
11:23: Found a possible solution by googling the problem, PTP mode. Set the camera to PTP mode however a D90 is always on PTP mode and istopmotion still doesn't recognise the D90 camera plugged in. We switched to a D70 and changed to PTP (as it had that option) and istopmotion recognised the camera.
D90 problem hasn't been solved concerning its connection problem.
11:33: Having found a solution we are now using the D70 for filming.
Technical difficulties!
11:40: Right now stopmotion will not take the frames!
So even though it has now recognised the D70 it will not capture anything! Tried putting the memory card in - took a picture it worked - however it wouldn't put the image on the timeline or even finish taking the image. Making the Mac freeze!
11:45: It took a frame but the image is dark, so we're going to try and switch the lights on and create the scene properly. Also the capturing of the frame is still very slow.
11:48: Taking the picture BUT its just Black!!! Grr! (turn it off - turn it on)
11:55: Its working, though its still dark and the way it takes the image is wrong, just repeating and capturing the same image - can't seem to adjust the quality of the image.
12:00: Stopmotion still taking image slowly, even though the quality is better. Counted the delay from capture to import through stopmotion from the camera precisely 20seconds.

BOOTIFUL!
Concluding...
20:22: Overall today has been a success however using myself as the main character using my body I feel is a mistake as I'm not satisfied and extremely critical.
Its hard to direct visually when acting as well as I can't move to set-up or see the shots. Having to trust in the skills and talent of my Co-director and leading animator. I could improve this by using a different model however I have no one at my disposal.
It is difficult and i'm getting progressively worried that its not what I visioned and its disheartening.
Though the only scene I am truly satisfied with is the timelapse knee shot. Firm smoothness is what I like and its effective.
22:00: Going over the footage today, readjusted my outlook on what was achieved. Thinking about it logically, its again shaping my film, my idea - decided to cut some scenes with the clay engraving and do more scenes of my body timelapsing - as that tells the story in itself - the drying and wet looping reversed looks like a living organism. Feeling more confident about my process a lot more happier - letting the worry of what needed to be done and the way my body looked got me all emotional, I wasn't seeing the art, the beauty in the art.
22:15: I've gone out of my comfort zone to produce something daring and surreal using my intimate body as a tool, for my final project.
Its been very helpful (although stressful) having both lesley and leon challenging and pushing me, even though I become agitated and angry with them, as I am defensive.

Concluding on the body...
18:15: Its difficult to direct and be satisfied when using myself - its frustrating having the attachments feeling personal about it, I have to see my body as not mine.
18:18: Leon is currently removing frames from the footage to make the animation smoother, less shaky. The scene with the Orb facing the camera is good but I will try and adjust the frame or make the surrounding area darker to better hide my breasts.

Happy with the animation though, couldn't get any smooth movement after 4secs.

Managed to take subtle movements, though could of done with more, got the hang of animating the snake as we progressed further into the animating.
Even though I managed to animate (11secs) would of benefited from taking slower shots . Subtle movements.
Painstaking process but worthwhile, very effective due to having Lesley working alongside me.

This scene took awhile due to typical animating problems of accidentally kicking the camera so it moved... spent the majority of the time realigning the shot.
Began editing scenes done today 19:05 so overall managed to complete five different scenes - a few being where Zeus (patriarchy) first appears, two important scenes. The eye scene for opening and becoming pained both completed for Medusa, very effective, happy results for the usage of clay (cracking etc) The Orb being consumed scene, I feel needs to grow on me, not 100% satisfied with it, however the other scenes with the orb I wasn't too pleased with at first but now I really love them.
Reasons behind not being 100% satisfied with the "consuming" is mainly because it doesn't look like its being consumed by Medusa's stomach or shrinking in - but what we achieved is good - it has lots of clay movement, even though the camera was kicked (and myself having a laughing fit - which didn't give me brownie points in anyway) it can be adjusted and was still successful!

Concluding of the day the 1st May
Overall tiring day animating feeling agitated, i'm my worse critic - worried about it not being good enough, if what i've done is good enough...
The Orb glowing scene turned out to be quite successful, Very happy and excited about the outcome with the editing process. Orb smash scene in the hand was effective, wouldn't of minded doing a transition scene with the hand going from clay to terracotta...
The force push scene was a weak point I felt in my animating as it was done via camera and the clay could of been piled on more... disheartening that I didn't do what I felt I needed to do in order for it to be more successful - having frustration and stresses didn't help.
Having terracotta on the flesh was very effective didn't think it would be was pleasantly surprised.
Easter animating completed!
Narration Animating!
Now that I had completed all the scenes with the body, I know had to figure out what I could possible do with my narration. Not wanting to have it spoken out by voice actors (mainly because I couldn't find anyone appropriate and for it not to become 'cheesy') I decided to have the narration written out...
(Using Runic Symbols to create MEDUSA style writing)
Writing the narration into clay was a task for me, having no idea on how I could possible approach this way of animating - I had to do go back and do some research; using my own handwriting was just not going to happen. So I went back to my storyboard and realised my initial idea to use old language.
These are the templates which I used to create the symbolic handwriting.
I referred to the Runic symbols for the character MEDUSA and her narration and the Greek Alphabet to the character ZEUS.
(Greek Alphabet written in Tarracotta clay for ZEUS)
Overall I was very pleased with the Runic handwriting outcome, and not so keen on the Greek alphabet. I felt given more time I could of improved on the Zeus narration, the overall display and alignment.
